After all, Chinese medicine and Ayurveda have long revered cinnamon for its near superpowers,
using it to treat things such as colds, indigestion and cramps, not to mention for its anti-clotting properties as well as attributes for cognitive function and memory. These societies also believed cinnamon could improve energy, vitality and circulation. It’s no wonder we’ve dubbed it a superfood!
Many of cinnamon’s fantastic properties come from one substance, something called
cinnamaldehyde, which is naturally present in cinnamon. According to Parikh, cinnamaldehyde is the source many of the antifungal and antibacterial properties that make cinnamon such a great addition to your diet.
But that’s not all. “Cinnamon’s high concentration of antioxidants can help protect the body from damage from free radicals and reduce inflammation, reducing risk of cancer and other diseases,” explains Farley.
The combination of cinnamaldehyde, antioxidants and cinnamon’s high fiber content are some of the characteristics that lend it its incredible positive effects on the human body.
The only things you need for this recipe are 2 cans of pie filling and an 8-count roll of cinnamon rolls. You can use ANY flavor pie fillings you like. I used apple and cherry because I had them in my pantry, but you could mix and match cherry, apple, blueberry, peach…whatever you like. I used a large 10″ pie plate but you can also use a 9×9 or 11×7 pan.
Once the cinnamon rolls are baked you pour the icing that came with them all over the top and serve. The cinnamon rolls make it breakfast food, the pie filling makes it dessert. So which is it??!! (Hint: BOTH.)
2 cans (approximately 20 oz. each) Pie Filling (any flavor)
1 roll refrigerated Cinnamon Rolls (8 roll size)
Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly spray a 10" pie plate, 9x9" pan, or 11x7" pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Dump both pie fillings in the bottom of the pan. Unroll the cinnamon rolls and place over the top, reserving the icing for after baking.
Bake for 14-18 minutes, until cinnamon rolls are cooked through and filling is bubbly. Frost with icing and serve warm for brunch, breakfast, or dessert.
